The first lords of Chéoux
A little history .... Belgian
Chéoux , place, according to Terre Wallonne "was reported at the same time as the Abbey of Stavelot it is said that" Richaire gave to the abbey of Stavelot manses to Chéoux September, included the donation of wood excellent food capable of feeding on the acorns a thousand pigs per year. This sale was approved by Arnold of Corinth who reigned over the ancient kingdom of Louis the German ... "
This involves Richaire, 11th bishop of Tongeren and Maestrich, who reportedly died in 945. It is in 891 the king of Corinth Arnoult approves " exchange " between Richaire and monks of the abbey of Stavelot ... ... ..
Already in 747, Ferrières was given by the Mayor of the Palace Carloman on the same abbey. But after Joseph Lemmens "The memory of Monasteries" Abbey of Stavelot was founded by Saint Remacle who had received from Grimoald, another Mayor of the Palace grounds to Cugnon (see "The First Lords of Cugnon " ) to build a monastery, there lived a hermit (or not) to ultimately create the Stavelot and Malmedy and between 647 and 650!
Chéoux appears between 647 and 891.
In 888, apparently, that Chéoux is divided into 3 sections:
- Chéoux-Rendeux, which should be a loam, a freehold
- Chéoux-
Nobility - Chéoux-Lavaux.
Chéoux-Nobility owned several castles in its territory, inhabited by noble families, including: Chéoux, Villers, and of Groulard Favaige, but that was a bit later ....
... ... the 26/07/1199, the Treaty of Dinant changes the landscape. The marquis de Namur is dissolved and Durbuy, Laroche and the Provost are attached to Poilvache County of Luxembourg, whose owner is at that time, Thierry Bar, husband of Ermesinde Namur - Luxembourg, the only daughter of Count Henri the Blind, Count of Namur-Luxembourg. The inhabitants of
Chéoux are directly concerned because now their strongholds are in the county of Luxembourg!
The first character found and verified Chéoux named Melchior is married to Mary Briffoz, daughter of Jacques de Briffoz, lord of the said place (Villers Tours to appear until much later on a survey of families with their coat of arms ). They have three daughters and a son, according to some authors. Not to mention a natural son, Thibault de Chéoux. The bottom
Monin has some original parchments and relatively old for this family of Chéoux, and apparently some other more recent I'd say they are a trial transcript and that's where mistakes originate. An old parchment
says " Genealogy of the noble and ancient house and family Chéoux "
A poem (the priest Frogneux) was born at the very famous and very epic battle known as " War cow "- dated 1275 and which lasted several years - which also took part Durbuy Gerard said the Comte de Luxembourg, which appear to Chéoux:
" ... sarteurs and loggers, who are said to be booted to sart in spurs ... ... "
Chéoux Melchior, owns property in Durbuy, Chéoux probably Laroche, he says squire. Chéoux-Rendeux lies on the boundary established by John the Blind King of Bohemia and / or King Wenscesla. Melchior was probably the weapon and served under the command of Huard Altar was marshal and seneschal of Luxembourg and the Duchy of Luxembourg led (Which was part-Rendeux Chéoux) on behalf of his overlord. We know that Huart Altar levies troops in Durbuy in 1412, he lived on a war footing at the Chateau Laroche, a real fortress, and he agrees with Philip of Burgundy in 1443. It is also the time when the country is ablaze with his band of skinners headed by Bartholomew Altar facing Philip of Burgundy ... ..

Melchior Chéoux Chéoux is the first attested in the region, born about 1420, but Hemricourt in its relationship " The war Awans "in 1325 (against Waroux) cites a knight, Jean de Shitting ... ... maybe Chéoux deformation of the surname, which already was named the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, Chiu, and before that, Siu, in probably by passing Cheux.
There is indeed a family Shitting on the shield, but nothing that seems to be related Chéoux. 03/13/1448
And it is on a Hodister act as witness to Melcion Theu. The blazon (damaged) seems to be that of Chéoux. Is this a transcription error - sh -? Or a second surname, which defined a possession - Theux -?
Knowing the difficulty of setting names and the problems of writing and speaking, Walloon already being used at that time, it is understandable that the surnames have suffered a lot of distortion.
For another example, in 1482 was written to brief the Briffoz
... ... We would have already Chéoux in 1275 and John in 1325 ... .. Chéoux then Chéoux Melchior was born around 1420. ... ..
