Paul and Rome

Romans 15.20-29

GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO THE QUARTER:

The Epistle to the Romans is a monument of the apostolic thought. All
throughout history, the great theologians have scrutinized this letter. It is however
the 16th century, when the Reformation, she met
the keenest interest. It remains a touchstone for
Christian thought, because that is all the gospel the apostle formula,
systematically.

When he wrote this letter, Paul is most likely
Corinth, around the year 57. He preached non-Jews in
the eastern Mediterranean (Rm 15.19). He has already written
much of his epistles (Thessalonians, Corinthians, Galatians
perhaps Philippians).

We do not know precisely who the recipients of the Epistle to the Romans
. One thing is certain: the name of Christ has been proclaimed
in the capital, but it is not the Apostle Paul who preached, because it is not yet
went to Rome.

plan following, proposed by the NBS can help us understand
articulation of the Epistle:

1. Faith alone justifies: 1.16-4.25

Faith justifies men
- non-Jews (1)
- Jews (2)
- finally all men (3.1-20)

The justification for:
- all men (3.21-30)
- but even Abraham (4.1-12)
- and also non-Jews (4.13-25)

2. Death Act, the law of life: 5-8

Christ delivers from death
- because he alone died for all (5)
- through baptism we are associated with him (6)
- which only breaks the law of slavery and sin
(7)

Life in the Spirit is
- to be led by the Spirit (8.1-11)
- live as a foster son (8.12-21)
- that nothing can separate from the Father (8.22-39)

3. Grace to all men 9-11

Yet Israel has hardened
- despite its authentic privileges (9.1-5)
- by not understanding that he was chosen by
through (9.6-29)
- seeking to be justified by works
(9.30 -10.21)

But this does not run as hardening part, temporary
- a remnant remains in Israel (11.1-10)
- even non-Jewish believers are grafted onto
Israel (11.11-24)
- one day all Israel will be saved (11.25-32)

4. The life of man justified: 12-15

He thinks and acts differently
- renewed in his intellect (12:1-3) 3

Jacques Rase - he puts his gifts to serve others (12.4-16)
- they seek to live in peace with all men
(12.17-13.14)

Hosted by Christ, he receives in turn
- without judging or despising
special purposes (14)
- according to the divine plan to unite Jews and non-) Jews
(15.1-13)
- as illustrated by the apostle in his ministry
(15.14-16.27)

In the text of Romans 15.20-29 Paul evokes a time
hinge of his ministry.

Reading this text, ask yourself (or rather ask him)
following questions: • What

in this text are elements that evoke the past,
present, the future of the mission of Paul?

• What are the countries mentioned, and how can we connect them to
different times of the ministry of the apostle?

• what are the people mentioned, how are they
named?

In verses 20-22 , Paul reported on the specificity
his ministry. He recalled the success of his work in the East ( 15.17-19).
So far, he started as a point of honor to organize its work according
two limits: a territory (where
Christ had not been appointed) and people (who
had not heard about). The goal was not to walk on the beds of
other evangelists (see Galatians 2.7-9). He believes his mission is to ask
foundations. He has done pioneering work in
East, which has mobilized all its energy until now.

For these reasons he now only writes to the believers of Rome
while for a long time he did not attempt to enter
contact with them.

Paul reported on his mission: what has been achieved, the present,
future plans. Does it happen to me also pause to take stock?
How do I analyze my past accomplishments? What
my future plans?

Paul is very respectful of each department. It ensures
careful not to encroach on the "territory" of others?
What is it in my church? What is it for me?

The key to the apostle, is the mission. What is it for me?
The announcement of the good news of salvation Is in the center of my life?
v.23, 24 - Paul was certainly more active than we
relates the book of Acts. Paul's strategy is clear. It is not
went everywhere, but he "squared (Circularly - v.19) the country
ranging from Palestine to the Adriatic, by giving employees the
churches "planted" to continue its pioneering work. It does not
now return to these churches, thereby running the risk
to compete with its successors.

It can therefore consider sharing a few moments with the Roman
. Notice the words "to you", "home",
"With You", which shows a desire to know, a desire
relations and communion with them.

Since the Church of Rome has been founded by someone else, he does not want
linger in Rome. Its passage will not
a mission of evangelization, but a simple visit. Paul wants to go through Rome
to go to a new greenfield: Spain.

Am I respectful of others' work, and happy
their success? How to work more for the good of my
local community and the Church?

Paul wants to enjoy the relationship with his brother Roman. What is
state relations in my church? What to do to develop
quality relationships? How to welcome a brother
passage? Do I have the desire to get to know?

v.25-27. It remains to Paul perilous and urgent mission: to bring to Jerusalem
product collection made in the churches he founded
. If it is still the same collection as in 1 Cor 16, it's been 3 years
it lasts. The funds were to be considerable
even if they have been made several times in Jerusalem. It includes
Paul wishes to be accompanied by (1 Cor 16.4).
Paul hopes to welcome this gift to seal the unity between the two
components of the early Church: the Christians of Jewish and Christian
of Greek origin. (Rom 15.31).

This return to Jerusalem (see Acts 19:21) Paul is an entire
symbol. A full circle. He left Jerusalem with a
message to give to the Gentiles, and he now brings the fruits of his labor
and assistance to the brethren in Jerusalem. It as if, before leaving for Rome
and Spain, he wanted a free hand.
before embarking on a new mission, he wants to get his discharge on
mission in East Jerusalem by the brothers ("completed this deal"
v.28 - see also v.31).

Am I aware of my gifts and abilities? How can I use
best?

In my community, how different groups contribuentils
- each with their capabilities - the development of the Church?
How can we help each others?

Am I aware of what I can bring to others, but also
that I can receive them? I'm anxious to promote unity
(not uniformity) of my local community and the Church in general?

v.28-29 - Having talked about his department spent in the East, has explained his mission to Jerusalem
. He now turns to his future plans.
He always wanted to be available for the service of God, whatever
are the countries where the Spirit led him. He responded to the call of
Macedonian (Acts 16) and set foot on the European continent.
it now wants to explore this territory to the end: Spain.
He also wants to reassure the Romans: his journey is not a breach of the contract
Apostolic ... It takes place with the full blessing of Christ, and probably
"with the agreement of all."

You'd think the apostle tired and happy to have finished
with its mission. Yet we are developing new goals. What
dynamism. ... There are times when I think I done enough to
God? Do I feel like throwing new challenges? What
could then motivate me?

My goal is to make it the blessing of Christ?
That the study of the quarter for each of you is a good
news, a source of "blessing of Christ." "May the God of
Peace be with you all! (15.33)

Jacques Rase
