Food in the Bible 12
1 Timothy 4.1-5

INTRODUCTION

The text lends itself to a discussion about what a
balanced lifestyle. These verses do not deal primarily
supply stability but spiritual, moral and religious.
The verses are part of a letter written to young evangelist Timothy
. From the beginning of the letter (after the address and the salutation),
it is clear that a problem undermines the community of Ephesus
(1.3-11 ) .

advised Timothy to stay put and fight against those who provide
"other education".

A long ecclesiastical tradition and scientific attributes this
letter to the apostle Paul. Some question the paternity. For the past
was given too much importance to fatherhood, and the truth "
and" inspiration "depending on the authenticity of the author.
Currently, attention is moving more on text than on
the author. This is the text that "speaks", as only he remains.
The author can not help me. Faced with the text, here I am alone, and
the best, along with other readers.

ANALYSIS OF TEXT

Observer

• A text always contains small keywords such as:
in effect, such as, but because ... Identify those who are
in 1 Tim 4.1-5 . Who are they? What is their function?

• Verses 1-3 form a single long phrase including
subordinate. If you were to rewrite this sentence in the
breaking up into several short sentences, what would your
version?

• Who or what is the origin of the apostasy of some
?

• In verses 3-5, we read:
o They require not to marry and to abstain from food

o God created them to be received with shares
Thanksgiving
o For those who believe and who know the truth.
o Now all that God created is good,
o And nothing to be refused, if it be received with
thanksgiving
o Because everything is sanctified by the word of God and the
prayer.

• Exercise: make the columns and put the following verses
facing each other: o
1 Timothy 1.3-7
o 1 Timothy 4.1-5
o 1 Timothy 4.7-8
o 1 Timothy 6.3-6
How do these passages show that they
concern of the apostle Paul for the stability spiritual, moral and religious
?

Understanding

As always, the text must be placed and understood in its context
.

According 1.3-11 (mentioned above), there are some in Ephesus
people who provide "other education".
two of them are specifically named in 1.20. Compare with
2 Tim 2.17.

following verses shed light on what this "other education
" 1 Tim 1.4, 4.3, 6.3-4 .

Timothy must fight against this teaching and false teachers.

From a theological point of view, the crux of heresy is defined
1 Tim 1.7-9
a.

Believers are imposed precepts and prohibitions which are
contrary to the gospel it was announced by Timothy.
A series of standards and practices are presented as religious
being essential for salvation. These standards are raised to the rank of
divine requirement.

What Paul said? They are fables and endless genealogies. They
prescribe celibacy (not to marry) and to abstain from certain foods
. There is divergence of views as
the attitude to adopt when we pray (2.8) at
behavior required of women, ...

Timothy must oppose this teaching style of life based
on the gospel sound doctrine.

In 2.2, Paul pleads for the community to lead a "peaceful and tranquil life
in all godliness and dignity." Follow recommendations
making this kind of community life possible
(2.8-3.13) . This passage closes as follows: "... you will know how
and must conduct themselves in God's house, which is
the Church of the Living God, the pillar and ground of truth. " (3.15)
False teachers to refrain from imposing certain foods. Paul
invalid prohibited by this one argument and a conclusion.

Argument: foods that God created to be taken
with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth
(verse 3b)

Conclusion: Everything that God created is good (verse 4a)
Heresy is based on flawed theology. It involves
the creative qualities of God and salvation in Christ. Salvation can be found
not only in Christ but in obedience to laws
purely human.

Abstinence from certain foods is likely
its origin in the law Jewish.

Moreover, the decision in Acts 15 (reread the text) appears here
obscured.

Mark 7.17-23 Matthew 15.10-20 and exhibit similar controversies
.

The text of Romans 14.1 to 15.13 shows how a life
Community "peaceful and quiet in all godliness and dignity"
is possible and feasible. According to the apostle Paul, such a life does not
obtained by laws and asceticism, but through the gospel
understood, lived and experienced.

Romans 15.7
could be a motto: "Do you mutually
welcome as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God
. "

QUESTIONS FOR PERSONAL MEDITATION

• For over a century, the church is experiencing tightness: fautil,
yes or no, being a vegetarian? What is pure and impure
? What is the proper way to celebrate the Sabbath? ...
The "Adventist means" Is it closer to Paul or his opponents
? Where do I stand ?

• When we read Romans 14:1
, we identify the most
often with the "strong." What does being "strong"?

• In the Christian tradition, bodily functions are often neglected

and more often seen
as a danger and hindrance to the spiritual life. In the list
the 7 deadly sins, three are directly related to the body: the
Lust (fornication, desire, passion, sensuality) gluttony
(intemperance, gluttony), sloth (laziness, sluggishness, indolence
). They say that the mind must master / subject the
body. How does this fit it with 1 Timothy 4.3-5 ?
